ENCAPSULA
kinetic sculpture, 2022, chlorophyll, mixed media
The sculpture was made as part of a science festival collaboration between artists and scientists. Enix conceived and created the sculpture in response to carbon cycle research by PhD candidate Beth Langley from the University of Glasgow.
The sculpture’s closed-loop design is a reflection on cyclical nature of the carbon cycle. As the coloured water falls, a pump carries it back to the top, where it begins its descent again. The water appears to glow, having been dyed with chlorophyll extracted from plants by the artist. This choice was inspired by how, in the carbon cycle, chlorophyll absorbs sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
